Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
By R.F. Kuang, Yellowface is the first book I have read from her. I purchased this book during the July month of Reese's Book Club. I feel indifferent writing this review because I am more of a romance and thriller novel kind of girl. This does not mean I will not read her other novels, such as Babel or The Poppy War.
Synopsis:
June and Athena are....frenemies? Juniper has struggled to work her way up as a New York Best Seller Author and barely gets by with her day job. As she watches her "friend" Athena rise from the top, Juniper "June" feels some way until she gets her shine when an unexpected death happens with Athena.
Review:
In my good reads, I gave it three stars. As I sit here typing this review, I ask myself why I gave the book three stars.
- Selfish: June is selfish to piggyback on other people's work and is not very forthcoming about her rise to stardom on her "book" debut.
- Unappreciative: June is the only person (or maybe) who knew how she rose from the top. For her to complain and be ungrateful to her "reviewers," she should be a little sensitive to that nature.
- Ethics: June has no ethics and morals, allowing her to be the most hated person as a book author. And if she were a natural person, I would hate her too!
Overall, R.F. has done a fantastic job putting the reader in the author's shoes on how to rise as a best-selling author in real-time. It is not easy and requires a lot of dedication and hard work. I applaud all the authors out there for putting themselves against the world and having many backlash. You cannot please everyone; only some have the same taste of reading genre.
If you want to read a novel that is outside your comfort zone and love frenemies, I highly recommend this read for you!
Recommendation: 4/5
