The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah is my first book ever read by her. I must say, WOW! It is such a great novel to read about WWII. This novel is fiction, but it makes you believe you are reading a true story. However, her research on writing this novel states that some parts is based on actual events.
Synopsis:
It is about two sisters living through World War II during the takeover of the German Nazis. The two sisters are completely different. One sticks with the rules and keeps her head down, while the other is rebellious and wants to take over and prove herself as a woman. Both sisters struggle with family despair; one sister continues to fight for love and attention from her family.
As the war continues, they both realize the importance of being there for one another without the other knowing and how to protect each other despite the years separating them and their father.
Review:
As a child growing up, my favorite school subject was history, particularly WWI and WWII. I have read the book by Ann Frank, and until this day, WWII has always caught my attention with the heartbreak the Jews had to go through. We always read about their hardship but never read the perspective of the French.
Reading The Nightingale has given me a different perspective from the French and the incredible realization that the Jews at that time were suffering. Everyone was. We tend to forget because the Jews were the most prominent target due to their religion.
In the Nightingale, it has allowed you to think about your relationships with the ones you love, who you have left behind, and who and how to trust.
This novel is indeed sad and heartbreaking and will get you in tears. If you like WWII history, love, and trust, this is for you!
My overall recommendation: 5/5
